We start by explaining how the city was founded over two islands in the middle of Lake Texcoco and why the Mexica choose that spot. For 200 years the Aztec empire thrived. But just as the prophecy of the return of the god, Quezalcoatl told, in the year “one reed” in the Aztec calendar men arrived from the east and the downfall of the empire was complete in only two short years. The Spanish conquistadors had arrived and changed Mexico and Central America forever. But how where they able to take down such a fierce and highly advanced people? We will get into that too!

The cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica), full of its fruits, called nōchtli in Nahuatl, represents the island of Tenochtitlan. To the Mexicans, the snake represented wisdom, and it had strong connotations with the god Quetzalcoatl.
